INDEX TAB FINISHING > Summary Guidelines
Review the following Summary Guidelines prior to designing your project.

Tab Cutting
  • Use the standard inset of 1/2” for tabs with a binding edge length greater than 8.5” and a 1/4” inset for tabs with a binding edge length of 8.5” or less. These insets are necessary when tabs will be processed on automated punching equipment.

  • Offset printed sheets must be totally dry prior to tab cutting. Wet ink on one sheet may cause offsetting on subsequent sheets. To ensure the quality of a tab order, additional dry time may be necessary.

  • Provide additional stock for setup.

Mylar Tab Laminating
  • Use the offset printing process when tabs with full body copy require mylar laminated extensions.

  • Use offset inks/coatings and digital toners that are heat resistant to 350° to avoid problems with printed images.

  • Offset printed sheets must be totally dry prior to mylar tab laminating. The adhesive on the tab mylar may not adhere to the sheet due to wet ink. To ensure the quality of a tab order, additional dry time may be necessary.

  • Digitally printed sheets must be free of un-fused toner and excessive fuser oils. The tab mylar adhesives only work when clean and dry paper fiber is contacted.

  • Avoid heavy ink coverage if the tab extension will be laminated. Poor adhesion, cloudiness and bubbling may result.

  • Provide additional stock for setup.

Binding Edge Reinforcing
  • Offset printed sheets must be totally dry prior to binding edge reinforcing. The adhesive on the reinforcing tape may not adhere to the sheet due to wet ink. To ensure the quality of a tab order, additional dry time may be necessary.

  • Digitally printed sheets must be free of un-fused toner and excessive fuser oils. The reinforcing tape adhesives only work when clean and dry paper fiber is contacted.

  • Provide additional stock for setup.

Tip-In Tape Application
  • Allow spacing for the tip-in tape to minimize covering text or images.

  • Offset printed sheets must be totally dry prior to tip-in tape application. The tip-tape adhesive may not adhere to the sheet due to wet ink. To ensure the quality of a tab order, additional dry time may be necessary.

  • Digitally printed sheets must be free of un-fused toner and excessive fuser oils. The tip-in tape adhesives only work when clean and dry paper fiber is contacted.

  • Avoid heavy ink coverage if the tab extension will be laminated. Poor adhesion, cloudiness and bubbling may result.

  • Provide additional stock for setup.

Tab Collating
  • It is best to supply all printed tab sheets uncollated and to collate them as the last process.

  • Pre-collated, digital copier tabs that require binding-edge reinforcing must be supplied reverse-collated.

  • Provide additional stock for setup.

Tab Drilling
  • Allow spacing for binding-edge finishing required for additional book binding services #(ie, Wire Binding, Coil Binding, Drilling)

  • Indicate the hole diameter and center-to-center spacing required for drilling.

  • Provide additional stock for setup.

Packaging
  • Straight stack your material using the same orientation (head to head, foot to foot).

  • Mark each carton to identify the documents/signatures contained within. The better the identification and organization of the contents, the faster the job will be processed.

  • Provide additional stock for setup.
